Owning a new home comes with the confidence that everything is fresh, efficient and built with quality. But as you settle into your new home, remember that even the best systems need routine care to stay that way. Small maintenance tasks can make a big difference in protecting your home, improving performance and giving you peace of mind day to day.
One often-overlooked chore? Cleaning your dryer vent. Over time, dryer vents accumulate lint, which is highly flammable. Cleaning your dryer at least once a year can help reduce your risk of fire—while also helping your dryer run more efficiently.
What you’ll need:
Step 1: Move and unplug dryer
Move the dryer away from the wall and unplug it for safety.
Step 2: Disconnect the vent
Use a screwdriver to loosen the vent clamp on the back of the dryer, then remove the vent.
Step 3: Clear lint buildup
Reach into the opening and remove any lint or debris. Check the vent tubing as well. For hard to reach areas, use the vacuum hose to clear out any remaining lint. Next, go outside and check the exterior vent. Reach into the vent opening and remove any buildup.
Step 4: Reassemble
Reattach the vent and tighten the clamp securely. Carefully plug in the dryer, then run an “air fluff” or low heat cycle for about 10 minutes to ensure proper airflow.
A quick annual check like this can go a long way in protecting your home and keeping everyday systems working as they should. With just a little maintenance, you can continue enjoying the comfort, efficiency and peace of mind that come with your new home.
