Even though they've hit "empty nester" status, Maurice and Devorah Robinson craved a home with enough space for their seven adult children and five grandchildren to comfortably visit. They shared, "This pursuit compelled us to look for a newly constructed home—a forever home—and we found it with Drees!" They loved the idea of being able to find a floor plan that provided everything they needed. "The icing on the cake was the ability to create the look and design we wanted while only needing modest changes," they added. Drees worked with the Robinsons to bring their vision of home to life.
The couple sat down to share insights into their home building process.
We choose the Sommers floor plan, because of its open concept and design. We loved the high ceilings and abundance of cabinetry in the kitchen. The owner's suite was great and had a beautiful on-suite, oversized bath with a generous walk-in shower. We also liked the curved stairway leading to the second floor. There, we added niches to the walls ascending our staircase. The family ready room, a laundry/mudroom space, was very appealing and spacious.
Drees is big on energy efficiency and to encapsulate this, we were able to select tankless water heaters as well as energy-efficient appliances. The Sommers also offered the number of available rooms and living spaces needed for large family visits with no hotels or rentals needed to accommodate them all.
We have multiple favorites. We choose high gloss tile for our owner's suite bath and a long entryway leading into the home, which made the floor plan pop! Once more, the beautiful spacious kitchen with an abundance of cabinet space provided an ample amount of storage space to accommodate our kitchenware.
We love to entertain, and this space has the capacity for our needs. We particularly loved the ability to get both full glass metal doors for the entry door and the large sliding glass doors leading into our extended covered patio. During pre-construction, we could only imagine how it would look, but once these items were in place and completed, we adored it.
We enjoyed the process from start to finish as we have seen our selected designs come to life. Some of our most enjoyable and memorable moments were the Design Center meetings, and the time, care and attention given by the Drees Design Consultant. We pre-planned our desired interior and an exterior design by searching online and window-shopping stores. We also visited other Drees model homes for ideas.
Once in the final construction stage, we were excited to see that the color schemes chosen worked well. We must give credit to our Design Center Consultants for their expert advice and intelligence in product availability. With their guidance, our owner's suite bathroom turned out to be our “WOW” statement.
We highly recommend purchasing a semi-custom home, an option Drees offers. We'd also tell others to take their time and expect delays. Plan your selections for each area of your home and expect modifications during pre-construction. Attempt to have an idea of what is wanted before your Design Center meeting. This way, things will go smoothly. With your floor plan, think about the placement of furniture, where you would like your electrical outlets and light switches positioned, as well as other adaptions.
We also suggest making bi-weekly site visits and getting to know your Builder and Construction Manager personally to address questions and any concerns. This is an investment, but Drees understands this and is there to assist during the entire process.
We choose to go with Drees Custom Homes as they offered the ability to customize, which was very important to us. We were told by several builders that we were “too picky.” However, we did not get that from Drees. We asked and they delivered. We pushed the original design a bit to reflect our personalities, but our vision was acknowledged by the Drees team and executed in full. As we worked with Drees and completed our new build home, we were impressed with the customer service received from our community's Market Manager Michi Marshall. From start to finish, she was just a phone call away.
Drees kept us updated during the process weekly with emails and pictures. We knew our timeline throughout the construction process. Variation changes were well received and were easily integrated into the build. We received outstanding customer service! Overall, we had an enjoyable experience with Drees and love the product Drees delivered.
